About this work

This sketch shows a city packed with tall buildings, some leaning at odd angles. A church steeple cuts through the middle, and ships dot the water in the background. The lines are scratchy and uneven, like a quick sketch with lots of shading. The artist used heavy black lines to make the buildings look sharp and angular, almost like a city under stress. The way the lines overlap gives it a crowded, chaotic feel. Look up The Cleveland Museum of Art to see more works like this.
