Two Seated Figures is a 1621 ink by Edouard Eckman, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows two people drawn in a simple, sketchy style. One stands holding a long stick, dressed in baggy clothes and a hat with a feather. The other sits slumped on a stool, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and loose, rumpled clothes. The lines are rough, and the whole scene looks like it was carved into wood. The artist used a technique called woodcut, where the image is cut into a block of wood and then inked. This made the lines sharp but left the shading very basic. Next, check out the technique: woodcut to see how it works.
