Reynard Departs with the Badger is a 1650 ink by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, depicting Hunting, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a fox in a fur coat carrying off a smaller badger in a basket. The fox’s smug grin and the badger’s worried face make the scene funny and mean. People in the 1600s loved tales like this, where animals acted like people. Everdingen made many prints like this, copying old animal fables with sharp lines. His work was popular but faded over time. Look closely—you can almost hear the fox giggling. Try an etching by Rembrandt, also at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
