a) La Borne, Verdun (recto); b) Wounded Soldier and First-Aid Man (verso) is a 1916 graphite by Jean-Louis Forain, depicting World War I, held at National Gallery of Art.
This pencil drawing shows a soldier leaning on a comrade in a trench. The lines are scratchy and urgent, like the moment was drawn fast. The faces are barely sketched—more feeling than detail. Forain was a war artist in World War I. He rode with troops, drew what he saw. Most artists stayed safe; he didn’t. Look up Forain, Jean-Louis.
Jean-Louis Forain (French pronunciation: ; 23 October 1852 – 11 July 1931) was a French Impressionist painter and printmaker, working in media including oils, watercolour, pastel, etching and lithograph.
