Rassurez vous; je suis gauché. is a 1916 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two men in rough clothes. One stands holding a shovel, looking down at the other man, who’s slumped on the ground with his head back. The background is messy, with a dog lying nearby and a few scattered objects. The lines are loose and scratchy, like quick notes. The standing man’s cap and the fallen man’s slumped posture give it a tense, uneven feel. The words written at the bottom are French, but they’re hard to read in this sketch. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shading with crisscrossed lines.
Jean-Louis Forain (French pronunciation: ; 23 October 1852 – 11 July 1931) was a French Impressionist painter and printmaker, working in media including oils, watercolour, pastel, etching and lithograph.
