Le retour du permissionnaire. -Tu Tombes a pie! is a 1916 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two soldiers in heavy coats and helmets. One is mid-step, raising a rifle like he’s about to move fast. The other stands still, holding a bag, looking back. The background is rough, with faint shapes that might be buildings or people. The artist used quick, sketchy lines and some orange crayon to add warmth to the cold scene. The title hints at a soldier returning from leave—maybe that’s why one looks tense and the other seems ready to walk away. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with layers of lines.
Jean-Louis Forain (French pronunciation: ; 23 October 1852 – 11 July 1931) was a French Impressionist painter and printmaker, working in media including oils, watercolour, pastel, etching and lithograph.
