Attributes of Music is a 1863 unspecified by François Bonvin, a Impressionism work, depicting Musical Instrument, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This painting shows a lute and flute resting on sheet music. Light hits the instruments just right, making the wood grain show. The scene feels quiet, like music stopped for a moment. Bonvin painted this to balance other artworks. It hangs above a door, facing paintings of sculpture and painting in Paris. He belonged to Realism, a group that showed everyday life as it really was. A lute and flute rest on top of sheet music. This painting was intended to hang above a door, opposite still lifes that represented the other fine arts of painting and sculpture (the two related paintings are in the Musée du Louvre, Paris). Bonvin was part of the 19th-century movement known as Realism. Led by Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), the Realist painters were interested in depicting the world that surrounded them, as well as the popular culture of their time.
