First and Best Camp of the Trip is a 1895 oil by Frederic Remington, a American Impressionism work, depicting Tent, held at Art Institute of Chicago.
You see cowboys lounging around a campfire under a big night sky. One man plays a harmonica, another leans on his saddle, horses stand nearby. Remington painted this scene from memory after a real trip out West. He loved showing quiet moments, not just action—here, the firelight makes the men look warm and tired, even though the desert is cold. To see more like this, look up *impasto*—the thick, rough brushstrokes that make the fire glow.
