Two Chinese figures playing with pebbles on the ground is a 10 by George Chinnery, a Romanticism work, depicting Playing, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
Two men bend over small stones in a quiet moment. One crouches, one sits—both focused on the game between them. George Chinnery drew this in 1835, a quick snapshot of everyday life. The Victoria and Albert Museum keeps this delicate drawing safe. It’s small, just lines on paper, but it feels alive. Check out the museum’s watercolor sketches by Chinnery next.
The drawing depicts two Chinese figures, one squatting and one sitting, examining pebbles or counters on the ground. It is part of an album of 93 sketches made by George Chinnery in Macau and its surrounding areas. The album was bequeathed in 1928 by James Orange. Chinnery, a British artist active in India and China from 1802 to 1852, specialized in portraits and landscapes before settling in Macau.
