The Union Club is a 1801 watercolor by James Gillray, a Romanticism work, depicting Party, held at National Gallery of Art.
This odd print shows a fancy club room packed with men in wigs and coats. They sit around a long table covered in papers and tea. The room glows in soft watercolor glazes that give it a dreamy, almost silly feel. The joke is in the details. The men look serious but their faces are distorted—some are fat, some tiny, all exaggerated. It’s a sharp jab at powerful men who think they’re above others. This is classic Gillray, James.
James Gillray (13 August 1756 – 1 June 1815) was an English caricaturist and printmaker famous for his etched political and social satires, mainly published between 1792 and 1810.
