Discovery of Joseph's Cup is a 1523 ink by Giovanni Antonio da Brescia, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a group of men in old-style clothes, crowded around two donkeys with horns. One man in the center holds a cup while another leans in, looking surprised. The scene feels busy and dramatic, with lots of gestures and expressions. Some men carry bags or hats, and the ground has a few scattered objects. Notice how the artist used fine lines to build up shadows and textures—this is called cross-hatching. The details in the clothing and animals show careful work. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists create depth with lines.
Giovanni Antonio da Brescia was an Italian engraver of northern Italy, active in the approximate period 1490–1519, during the Italian Renaissance.
