Masque is a 1895 ink by Henri-Charles Guérard, a Impressionism work, depicting Mask, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a masked face with sharp green lines on soft paper. The green ink makes the face stand out like a ghostly shadow. The artist used drypoint, scratching lines into a metal plate to catch light just right. Drypoint is hard to control. Tiny bumps called “burrs” catch ink, making shaky edges. Guérard left those marks loose, so the face feels alive. Try making your own drypoint.
Henri Charles Guérard (26 April 1846, Paris - 24 March 1897, Paris) was a French painter and printmaker, particularly in etching and lithography.
