This painting shows a detailed watercolor of an ornate stone doorway inside a church. The archway is packed with carvings—figures, leaves, and strange creatures—stacked high like a 3D puzzle. Light filters through the arches, casting soft shadows on the columns below. At the bottom, a small person kneels in front of the entrance, making the carvings look even bigger. The artist focused on every tiny detail, from the folds in the robes to the way the stone wears unevenly. This kind of careful drawing was common in old travel sketches. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more of this artist’s work in person.
