Untitled is a 1678 ink by Hishikawa Moronobu 菱川師宣, a Baroque work, depicting Working, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows five people dressed in old-fashioned robes. One woman holds a basket, another plays a stringed instrument. A man in a tall hat walks with two women carrying fans. Trees and a building peek out behind them. The top is filled with text in a flowing script. Notice how the artist used fine lines to fill in shadows and patterns—this makes the clothes and faces pop. The scene looks like everyday life, but the clothes are fancy. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build depth with lines.
Hishikawa Moronobu made bold black-and-white prints of daily life in late-1600s Japan.
