Tempio della Fortuna Virile with the Tempio di Vesta in the Distance is a 1750 gouache by Italian 18th Century, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This painting shows two old Roman temples near a river at sunset. The Temple of Fortune stands in shadow while the Temple of Vesta glows pink behind it. Light hits the columns just right. The artist used gouache, a thick watercolor that lets colors pop. That’s why the sky looks so bright and the stone so real. Gouache was rare for big scenes like this. Go see it in person at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
This Italian artist carved bronze figures in the 18th century, blending myth and motion in metal.
