Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple [left plate] is a 1742 ink by John Baptist Jackson, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a group of robed men gathered around a young woman in a simple dress. They stand under arches and columns, with one man pointing upward while another holds a child. In the background, a rocky hillside rises, and a few figures kneel or stand at the edges. The young woman appears to be the focus, possibly the Virgin Mary, in a moment of religious significance. This is a trial print, meaning it’s a test version before the final colored work. Next, look up woodcut to see how this printing method works.
John Baptist Jackson (1701–1780) was a British artist, a woodcut printmaker of the eighteenth century.
