About this work

This drawing shows a grand temple scene with lots of details. In the center, a man in flowing robes kneels while another figure stands holding a door open. Above them, statues and angels crowd the building’s roof, and the walls have round pictures and fancy vases. The floor has a patterned rug, and the whole scene looks like a stage set with deep shadows and bright highlights. The artist used strong contrasts between light and dark to make the figures pop. This was a common trick in Baroque art to create drama and movement. Next, check out Baroque to see more paintings that use this bold style.
