Round Tower, Castle of Munoth, Schafhausen, Switzerland is a 1842 by John William Casilear, a Romanticism work, depicting Tower, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This painting shows a round stone tower standing in a green field near a river. The sky is clear and blue. One side of the tower is in shadow while the other glows in sunlight. Casilear wasn’t a full-time painter at first. He worked as an engraver before switching to landscapes. He traveled through Europe with his artist friends, sketching scenes like this one. His style reminds me of Asher B. Durand.
Casilear began his career as an engraver but shifted to landscape painting at the suggestion of his friend, the painter Asher B. Durand (1796–1866). He made this drawing while traveling in Europe with Durand and another New York landscape painter, John Frederick Kensett (1816–1872).
