Untitled is a 1818 ink by Katsushika Hokusai, a Japonisme work, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This busy scene shows a group of men in colorful robes and hats, some standing, some kneeling. One man holds a fan, another leans on a staff, and a woman in a flowing dress stands near them. The colors are bright but simple—reds, blues, and greens—with lots of patterns on the clothing. A small table holds a tray, and one man looks like he’s holding a scroll or letter. The print uses sharp lines and bold outlines, with some areas filled in carefully. The text at the top is in Japanese, which might be a poem or title. This style was meant for special occasions, not everyday use. If you like this, check out Katsushika Hokusai for more of his detailed prints.
Katsushika Hokusai spent his life in Edo, now Tokyo, where he drew and carved prints for a living.
