About this work

This picture shows a few roses on a dark background. The flowers are white and soft-looking, with some buds still closed. Thin leaves fill the space around them. The artist used a sharp tool to carve the lines into wood. This made the dark areas look smooth and the flowers stand out. Look up engraving to see how this works.
