Untitled is a 1742 ink by Kubo Shunman, a Baroque work, depicting belt, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows a small, simple scene on light paper. A person in a loose robe sits cross-legged, playing a stringed instrument that looks like a lute. Above them, two fish swim near the surface of the water, which is drawn with quick, wavy lines. The colors are soft—pinks, browns, and blacks—with a lot of empty space around the figures. The artist used short, sharp lines to show texture, especially on the fish and the instrument. The writing along the top edge is in Japanese, but it’s not clear what it says. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with lines.
