About this work

This image shows a fancy black-and-white design with swirling leaves, flowers, and a bird perched on a branch. Above it, a helmet sits empty, like it’s waiting for someone. The whole thing looks like it could be a family coat of arms or a decorative border. The artist used tiny lines to build up dark and light areas—this is called cross-hatching. It’s a trick to make flat paper look three-dimensional. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists use lines to create shadows.
