Near the Woods (Pres du bois) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a tangled forest edge with bare trees and tangled brush. The lines are rough and scratchy, like someone hurriedly drew them. Light fades into shadow near the center, where a small path or clearing might be. The artist used a technique called drypoint—scratching directly into a metal plate to create texture. This made the lines look uneven and alive, almost like wind through the trees. Check out technique: drypoint to see how artists used it to make marks feel dynamic.
Alphonse Legros (French pronunciation: ; 8 May 1837 – 8 December 1911) was a French, later British, painter, etcher, sculptor, and medallist.
