Spring (Le printemps) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a group of people sitting and standing in a wooded area. The trees are drawn with quick, wavy lines, and the people look relaxed, some leaning on branches. The background has a faint, misty look, with hints of a path or river winding through the scene. The artist used a scratchy, textured style to show light and shadow. This was done with etching and drypoint, which lets ink fill the lines made by a needle. Next, look up technique: etching, drypoint, aquatint.
Alphonse Legros (French pronunciation: ; 8 May 1837 – 8 December 1911) was a French, later British, painter, etcher, sculptor, and medallist.
