Quarts de plafons is a 1650 ink by Jean Lepautre, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows two grand scenes framed like ceiling panels. On the left, a bearded man floats above a cloud of flowers, his arms outstretched. To the right, a woman in flowing robes rises from a swirl of vines and leaves, her face turned upward. Below, a smaller circle holds a woman’s face surrounded by leaves and scrolls. The lines are sharp and detailed, with lots of texture in the drapery and foliage. This style was common in decorative art of the time. Look up etching to see how artists like Lepautre created these precise lines.
