Confessional, Church of St. Paul, Antwerp is a 1838 by Louis Haghe, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This painting shows a church interior with a priest in white robes standing in a confessional booth. Behind him, carved statues of angels and saints fill the altar space, glowing softly. Below, three women kneel or sit in prayer, while another woman reads from a book. The priest’s back is turned, making his face hidden—just like the hidden faces of the people confessing. Notice how the light hits the statues, making them look almost real. Want to see more? Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art for this painting in person.
Louis Haghe (17 March 1806 – 9 March 1885) was a lithographer and watercolourist from the Netherlands and then the United Kingdom.
