Sketches in Belgium and Germany, Second Series: No. 20 - Portail, Church of St. Peter, Louvain is a 1845 by Louis Haghe, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This drawing shows a church doorway packed with carved statues and tiny scenes. The figures on the statues look stiff and dressed in old-fashioned robes. Inside, a few people kneel or stand, while others walk through the arched entrance. Notice how the artist used shading to make the carvings pop off the wall. The light hits the statues just right, making them look three-dimensional. Check out chiaroscuro to see how this lighting trick works.
Louis Haghe (17 March 1806 – 9 March 1885) was a lithographer and watercolourist from the Netherlands and then the United Kingdom.
