Don Juan of Austria is a 1673 ink by Robert Nanteuil, a Baroque work, depicting Louis Xiv of France, held at National Gallery of Art.
Robert Nanteuil made this smooth engraving in 1673. It shows Don Juan of Austria in armor, looking calm. The face has fine lines that catch the light. Nanteuil worked for French kings. He cut images into metal plates, then inked them to print. This print looks almost like a drawing because of the way he uses cross-hatching. Look up engraving on Wikipedia to see how this method works.
Robert Nanteuil (French pronunciation: ; 1623 – 9 December 1678) was a French portrait artist: engraver, draughtsman and pastellist to the court of Louis XIV.
