Walter Devereux, First Earl of Essex is a 1620 ink by Magdalena van de Passe, a Baroque work, depicting Charles V, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a man in fancy clothes with a lace collar. His face looks tired, not proud. The artist made fine lines with a sharp tool to shade his face and coat. You can almost feel the stiffness of his starched collar. Engraving meant carving a metal plate. Ink fills the cuts. Then the plate presses onto paper. Here it shows small details like the lace threads. The artist, Magdalena van de Passe, often made portraits like this.
