Ready to Start is a 1917 ink by Joseph Pennell, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a huge old ship on dry land, surrounded by tracks. The ship has tall masts, thick ropes, and a big, flat deck. In the background, a few small airplanes fly overhead, looking tiny next to the massive vessel. The artist drew quick, loose lines to show the ship’s size and the tracks’ curves. The mix of old ships and new planes feels strange but exciting. Want to know more? Try looking up lithography.
