The Woolworth Building is a 1915 ink by Joseph Pennell, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a tall, narrow skyscraper with lots of windows and pointed towers. Around it are smaller buildings with steep roofs and detailed edges. The lines are scratchy and uneven, like they were drawn quickly or with a rough tool. The artist used a technique that leaves dark lines and textured marks—this is called drypoint. The buildings look sharp but a little messy, which gives them energy. Look up technique: drypoint to see how it works.
Joseph Pennell (July 4, 1857 – April 23, 1926) was an American draftsman, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator for books and magazines.
