Untitled is a 1968 charcoal by Philip Guston, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch shows a rough, black-and-white city scene. Buildings are drawn with jagged lines, and a giant clock face sits in the middle like a strange landmark. Two arms reach out from the sides, holding what looks like a tool or a stick. The artist used quick, uneven strokes—no smooth shading here. The clock’s hands point to around 6:05, but the rest of the scene feels off-kilter, like a dream. Next, check out scumbling to see how artists create texture with loose strokes.
Philip Guston was a Canadian and American painter, printmaker, muralist and draftsman.
