Untitled is a 1906 charcoal by Piet Mondrian, held at Museum of Modern Art.
This sketch shows a big, loose bouquet of flowers in someone’s hands. The flowers are drawn with quick, rough strokes—some petals look almost fuzzy. The person holding them is only partly visible, just their arm and fingers gripping the stems. The artist used lots of shading to show texture, especially in the leaves and fabric. The paper has a warm, yellowish tone, and the charcoal lines are uneven, like it was drawn fast. Check out scumbling to see how artists create soft, blended effects with charcoal.
