This sketch shows two trees standing on a grassy hillside. The branches twist and spread out, filled with small leaves drawn in quick, dark lines. Below them, the ground has short, uneven strokes to show grass and rocks. The artist used a lot of tiny parallel lines to build up the shadows and texture—this is called cross-hatching. It gives the trees a rough, almost three-dimensional look. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how this technique works in other drawings.
