A Stag beneath a Mighty Oak is a 1735 ink by Johann Elias Ridinger, a Baroque work, depicting Deer, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a detailed sketch of a stag standing under a strong oak tree. The artist used fine lines and careful shading to show the animal’s thick fur and the tree’s rough bark. The stag looks calm, almost proud, while the oak towers over it. Ridinger was known for his animal prints and drawings. He spent years studying deer and stags in the wild. This sketch shows that close observation—notice how the legs look real enough to touch. Check out the same artist’s work at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
