About this work

This painting shows two men working with a large fish. One man in a white shirt is holding the fish by its tail, while the other, in a blue shirt, leans over to help. The scene looks like a dock or waterfront, with a wooden platform and water below. The fish is pale and wet, and the men’s hands are focused on handling it carefully. The brushstrokes are thick, especially on the fish and the men’s clothes, giving the painting a textured look. This thick brushwork is called *impasto*—check it out to see how it changes the way a painting feels.
