William Simpson painted *Gateway of the Buddhist Top at Sanchi* in 1862. He was a watercolourist and war artist who traveled India after the 1857 Revolt. His Indian sketches became detailed watercolors back in London. Simpson’s trip started in Calcutta in 1859. He drew ruins and sites linked to the Revolt, then painted them from memory. The vivid colors and romantic style came later in his London studio. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more Simpson sketches.
