Collection of Various Caprices and New Designs of Cartouches and Ornaments: No 16 is a 1646 by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This image shows two black-and-white designs framed by swirling lines. The top part has a wide, curved border with two small faces peeking out from behind it, like masks. Below, a row of three smaller ornaments looks like leaves or vines wrapped around a rounded shape. The artist made these sketches to share decorative ideas, like wallpaper patterns. The swirls and faces might have been used in architecture or furniture. Next, look up Baroque to see more bold, dramatic designs from this time.
Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
