The Flight into Egypt [verso] is a 1637 ink by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two figures walking, one leading the other. The lines are loose and quick, almost like a hurried drawing. The person in front holds something long, maybe a stick or staff, while the one behind wears a head covering. The paper looks old, with faint blue lines running across it. The ink is mostly brown, but some areas are lighter, as if the artist changed their mind. If you like this sketchy style, look up cross-hatching.
Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
