Spanish Duke before Margaret of Austria is a 1612 ink by Antonio Tempesta, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a man in fancy Spanish clothes bowing to a seated woman. He looks nervous. She sits straight, hands folded, wearing a dark dress with a white collar. The artist used fine lines to show wrinkles in the man’s coat. The paper looks old and yellowed. Tiny dots make shadows around the figures. This kind of print is called an etching. Look for drypoint next.
Antonio Tempesta, also called il Tempestino (1555 – 5 August 1630), was an Italian painter and engraver, whose art acted as a point of connection between Baroque Rome and the culture of Antwerp.
