Context
Tom Clough, born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1867, began his career as a lithographic printer and draper before taking up landscape painting in the 1890s. He gained recognition when the Royal Academy accepted his painting Gorsey Heath in 1893. In 1894, he moved to Glan Conway in North Wales, a relocation that directly facilitated the creation of Conway Castle and many of his other well known works. Over his career, Clough exhibited fourteen paintings at the Royal Academy and also painted in Cornwall, Devon, Northern France, and Italy. He died in Llandudno, Wales, in 1943.
