About this work

You see two brown cows standing under a leafy tree. The cow on the left chews grass while its friend looks straight at us. The tree’s dark trunk and branches frame them like a quiet stage. This isn’t just cows in a field. Van de Velde used etching and drypoint to carve sharp lines and soft shadows onto a metal plate. The marks look rough but feel real—like you could reach out and touch the bark. Take a closer look at the cow on the right. Its ear curls forward, catching the light. Then head to the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
