Flora is a 1544 ink by Enea Vico, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a woman lying on her side, half-draped in flowing cloth. Her legs bend at an odd angle, and one arm stretches out toward a small plant. The fabric clings to her body in some spots, revealing muscle and skin. The background is mostly empty, with just a few lines suggesting a cloudy sky. The artist used fine lines and shading to make the cloth look soft and real. Notice how the light hits her shoulder—it’s subtle but makes the scene feel alive. Want to see how this technique works?
