    Museum of Modern Art Opens

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City officially opened its doors to the public on November 7, 1929, just days after the Wall Street Crash. Founded by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, and Mary Quinn Sullivan, the institution was established to champion modern art, which was then largely rejected by traditional museums. Its inaugural exhibition, 'Cézanne, Gauguin, Seurat, Van Gogh,' featured forty-five works and immediately drew significant public attention, establishing a new model for how modern art would be collected, displayed, and understood in the 20th century.

It became the preeminent global institution for the collection and promotion of modern and contemporary art.
