Archaeological Museum of Alicante

The Archaeological Museum of Alicante (Spanish: Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante, Valencian: Museu Arqueològic Provincial d'Alacant, abbreviated as MARQ) is an archaeological museum located in Alicante, Spain. Founded in 1932, the museum moved to its present home in 2000 following a major expansion and renovation project. It received the European Museum of the Year Award in 2004, becoming only the second Spanish museum after the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao to win this distinction. The institution occupies the historic buildings of the former Hospital of San Juan de Dios and presents the region's archaeological heritage through eight galleries that integrate multimedia technology to engage visitors with the lives of past inhabitants.

The museum was inaugurated in 1932 by Spanish President Niceto Alcala Zamora. For nearly seven decades it operated from other premises before a decisive relocation in 2000 transformed its scope and public presence. That year, the museum was re-inaugurated in its definitive form within the renovated structures of the antique Hospital of San Juan de Dios, a building designed by Juan Vidal Ramos. This move entailed significant expansion and a comprehensive restoration of the historic site. The quality of this transformation was recognised internationally when, in 2004, MARQ received the European Museum of the Year Award. This achievement marked it as the second Spanish institution, after Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum, to earn this honour, reflecting the success of its reinvention as a modern museum within a heritage setting.

The museum's collections are organised across eight galleries, with five permanent rooms dedicated to successive chronological periods and three additional spaces for temporary exhibitions. The five thematic halls cover Prehistory, Iberian culture, Roman culture, the Middle Ages, and Modern and Contemporary cultures. This chronological arrangement allows visitors to trace the human presence in the Alicante region from earliest times through to the present. A notable feature of the museum's presentation is its use of multimedia technology throughout the galleries, designed to enable visitors to interact directly with the material and to explore the daily lives of the region's former inhabitants. The three remaining halls provide flexible space for rotating special exhibitions, complementing the core chronological narrative with focused displays and loaned material.

The museum is housed in the former Hospital of San Juan de Dios, situated on Plaza Doctor Gómez Ulla in Alicante. The building was originally designed by the architect Juan Vidal Ramos. The conversion of this historic hospital into a museum involved extensive renovation that preserved the architectural character of the structure while adapting it to modern museum functions. The 2000 renovation and reallocation to these renovated buildings formed the basis for the museum's subsequent international recognition. The integration of contemporary exhibition infrastructure within this heritage setting has been central to both its critical acclaim and its visitor experience.
