Archaeological Museum of Serres

The Archaeological Museum of Serres is an archaeological museum located in the old centre of Serres, a city in Central Macedonia, Greece. It is housed in the city's Ottoman-era bedesten, a fifteenth-century building in Eleftherias Square. The museum was established in 1968 and moved to its current location in 1970, occupying a structure that is itself one of the most remarkable surviving examples of Ottoman commercial architecture in the region. Its collections span from the Neolithic through the Byzantine period, drawn from excavations across the Serres regional unit.

The museum was founded in 1968, and by 1970 it had been relocated to its present home in the Serres bedesten. This move placed the institution within a building of considerable historical significance: the bedesten was constructed around 1493/94 by Çandarlı Ibrahim Pasha the Younger, a prominent Ottoman statesman. The historian of Ottoman art Semavi Eyice subsequently identified the Serres bedesten as among the most notable specimens of its type, distinguished by excellent construction technique and a striking exterior. The adaptation of this former enclosed market for museum use represents a notable example of adaptive reuse in Greek museum practice.

Among the museum's most important objects are two Byzantine works from the Old Cathedral of Serres, dedicated to Saints Theodore Tyro and Theodore Stratelates: a marble icon of Christ and a twelfth-century mosaic depicting Saint Andrew the Apostle. The prehistoric collection includes Late Neolithic (5200-4500 BCE) statuettes, jewellery, tools, and vessels from Promachonas. Roman funerary stelae with reliefs provide extensive information about the social and commercial life of the region's inhabitants. The museum also holds coins, reliefs, sculptures, figurines, jewellery, and vases from the various classical sites in the regional unit.

The museum occupies the Serres bedesten, an enclosed and covered market built by Çandarlı Ibrahim Pasha the Younger around 1493/94. Semavi Eyice, the historian of Ottoman art, considered it among the most remarkable examples of the building type for its excellent construction technique and striking exterior. The structure is a rectangular single-storey building measuring 21 by 31 metres, divided into six sections by arches, each section topped by a dome. Notably, the domes are covered with tiles rather than lead. The building stands in Eleftherias Square in the old centre of Serres.
