Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar

The Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar is a museum in Lisbon, Portugal, dedicated to preserving and promoting the work of Júlio Pomar (1926-2018), one of Portugal's most significant modernist painters. Opened in 2013 and located between the historic neighborhoods of Bairro Alto and Madragoa, the museum operates under the management of EGEAC, Empresa de Gestão de Equipamentos e Animação Cultural, E.M., S.A., which it joined on 2 January 2015. The institution serves as both a repository for Pomar's multifaceted oeuvre and an active cultural venue for contemporary art discourse.

The Lisbon City Council purchased a former warehouse on Rua do Vale in 2000, intending it to serve as a studio for Júlio Pomar, who lived on the same street during the final years of his life. The architectural project was entrusted to Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Matosinhos-born architect who would receive the 1992 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Renovation work extended across several years, but in 2010 Pomar relinquished his plan to use the building as a studio, enabling the space to open as a museum earlier than originally anticipated. The name Atelier-Museu, or Studio-Museum, deliberately preserves the memory of this founding purpose even though the building never functioned as an active studio. The museum officially opened to the public in 2013.

The museum's collection comprises several hundred works on long-term loan from the Júlio Pomar Foundation, supplemented by additional acquisitions made by the institution itself. In total, the holdings encompass approximately 1,500 works by Júlio Pomar and other artists close to him. The collection spans painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, collage, printmaking, and assemblage, offering a unique panorama of Portuguese visual arts that traces an artistic trajectory from neorealism through the full embrace of modernity. This body of work documents Pomar's absorption and simultaneous rupture with various artistic influences, mirroring his conquest of artistic autonomy across different eras, periods, and political contexts. Beyond artworks, the museum holds a documentary and bibliographic collection including hundreds of images, books, catalogues, newspaper articles, and other historical records, enriched by additional materials compiled by the museum staff.

The collection's particular strength lies in its demonstration of Pomar's technical and thematic plurality, recognized by several generations as a hallmark of his multifaceted practice. The museum regularly organizes exhibitions that draw from this vast reservoir, since the complete collection cannot be displayed in a single presentation. These exhibitions feature sections of the collection alongside loans of seminal works from Pomar's production, including book illustrations and decorative arts pieces that confirm the plural dimension of his work. The institution also maintains an online portal through which more than 500 pieces from the collection can be explored digitally.

Álvaro Siza Vieira designed the building with an austere aesthetic and clean lines, discreetly integrated into the architectural fabric of one of Lisbon's most characteristic neighborhoods. The two-floor structure contains a central exhibition area, two storage rooms, service areas, an office, and a reception area, organized around a concealed exterior courtyard that guides visitor circulation. A small patio serves as a welcoming resting place within the neighborhood. Siza described this outdoor space as a welcoming area with benches and azulejo tiles by Júlio Pomar, calling it a sort of antechamber to the reception area. Pomar himself wished to place these tiles there, and Siza approved the integration, noting that in architectural composition, entrances are spaces that draw people in and prove crucial to the sequential experience of the spaces.

The Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar is situated on Rua do Vale in the Misericórdia parish of Lisbon, positioned between the Bairro Alto and Madragoa neighborhoods. As a public cultural institution, it was created by the Lisbon City Council in partnership with the Fundação Júlio Pomar. Since 2 January 2015, it has formed part of the network of cultural infrastructures managed by EGEAC, which promotes access to the arts and cultural production. The museum's programme extends beyond exhibition display to encompass conferences, talks with artists and curators, and educational activities, producing publications that document its activities alongside critical and poetic essays and research articles. The institution positions itself as a privileged place for encounters between various professionals and the general public, functioning as an open multi-perspectival space for contemporary art and culture.
