Culturgest

Culturgest is a prominent cultural foundation and contemporary arts center located in Lisbon, Portugal. Established in 1993 as a private institution by the state-owned bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), it plays a critical role in the Portuguese cultural landscape, ranking among the most important private cultural entities in the country alongside the Gulbenkian Foundation. The institution is dedicated to promoting contemporary creation and cultural production through a multidisciplinary program that spans performing arts, visual arts, music, cinema, and contemporary thought. Its name derives from the inversion of the initial syllables of the Portuguese words for culture and management, reflecting its origins in a cultural management company. Beyond its Lisbon headquarters, Culturgest also maintains a secondary venue in Porto.

The origins of Culturgest trace back to 1983, when CGD initiated systematic acquisitions to build a contemporary art collection, expanding its existing cultural patronage. In the mid-1980s, as CGD planned a new headquarters, the architectural designs by Arsénio Luís Raposo Cordeiro incorporated dedicated museum and event spaces. In July 1992, CGD, its holding company SGPS, and the Fundação Luso-Americana agreed to create a management company for these cultural facilities, leading to the formation of Culturgest, Gestão de Espaços Culturais, S.A. on August 12, 1993. Concurrently, CGD established the Culturgest, Fundação Caixa Geral de Depósitos as a private-law foundation with an initial endowment of 3.5 million euros, granting it use of the designated spaces in the new headquarters. Following the building's inauguration in spring 1993, the foundation officially opened to the public on October 11, 1993. A significant expansion occurred in 2002 with the opening of a second venue in Porto, located in the historic CGD building on the Avenida dos Aliados. In 2006, the foundation assumed responsibility for studying, promoting, and curating the CGD art collection.

While the collection encompasses a wide array of media and artists, specific notable holdings have been highlighted through institutional publications. The 2009 publication Open the Box: Works in the Colecção da Caixa Geral de Depósitos, co-produced by Culturgest and Delfim Sardo, served as a foundational text, examining 150 specific works from the broader collection. The institution continues to document its holdings through its Stories of the Collection project, which outlines key acquisition moments from 1983 to the present. Recent collection activities include the integration of works by historical artists, currently active practitioners, and mid-career artists, alongside acquisitions generated through the Caixa Competition for Young Artists, which introduces new artists to the collection.

Culturgest is located at Rua Arco do Cego 50, 1000-300 Lisbon, Portugal, situated in the heart of the city with access via public transportation and nearby parking. The foundation operates as a non-profit entity under the ongoing institutional and financial support of its founding entity, Caixa Geral de Depósitos. Its governance structure includes a Board of Directors, an Executive Board, and an Audit Board. The institution emphasizes educational programs, community engagement, and inclusive practices to enhance cultural access for diverse audiences. Loan requests for works from the collection must be submitted in writing six months in advance, directed to the President of Culturgest, and require a synopsis of the project, loan and exhibition dates, and a facilities report from the borrowing venue, culminating in a pre-approved loan agreement with CGD.
