Burhaniye National Forces Culture Museum

The Burhaniye National Forces Culture Museum (Turkish: Burhaniye Kuva'i Milliye Kültür Müzesi) is an archaeology and ethnography museum located in the Burhaniye district of Balıkesir Province in western Turkey. Established in 2008, the institution occupies an 18th-century building that served as the headquarters for local Kuva-yi Milliye (National Forces) militias during the Turkish War of Independence. Despite its name referencing the independence struggle, the museum's primary focus is the preservation and exhibition of regional ancient artifacts and cultural heritage, spanning from antiquity to the early republican era.

The museum building traces its origins to the 18th century during the Ottoman Empire, initially functioning as a commercial and lodging space where the ground floor housed a coffeehouse and hardware store, and the upper floor served as a city hotel. During the Turkish War of Independence, the structure was repurposed as the headquarters for local Kuva-yi Milliye militia forces. In the early years of the Turkish Republic, the building transitioned into a Halkevi (People's House) and later an officers club. Restoration efforts began in 2006 under the Burhaniye Municipality, culminating in the building's opening as a museum on November 24, 2008. It operates under the oversight of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, specifically the Balıkesir Kuva-yi Milliye Museum Directorate.

The museum divides its collections across two floors, blending archaeological and ethnographic holdings. The ground floor is dedicated to archaeology, featuring artifacts primarily sourced from the ancient city of Adramyttion and nearby sites. The upper floor houses ethnographic exhibits that contextualize local history, including family heirlooms from Burhaniye, traditional clothing, Ottoman documents, photographs, and weapons related to the National Forces. A notable component of the ethnographic section is the Bizimköy display, a sound-and-motion gallery that uses animated mannequins to depict traditional Anatolian village life and practices, such as the operation of water-powered mills and animal milking.

The archaeological collection relies heavily on artifacts granted by Özkan Arıkantürk, a significant private donor. Key exhibits on the ground floor include a trireme ship, alongside sections dedicated to coinage, ceramics, and personal adornments such as tweezers, brooches, earrings, necklaces, and pins. Roman-era glass articles constitute another major holding, including unguentarium vessels used as eye drop bottles or for holding perfumes and tears, as well as glass cups and rings. In the ethnographic section, a rare 1927 first-edition copy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's Nutuk in Ottoman script stands out as a signature historical document.

The museum is situated in a historic two-story 18th-century Ottoman building in the town center of Burhaniye, positioned at coordinates 39 degrees 30 minutes 13 seconds North, 26 degrees 58 minutes 52 seconds East. The structure retains its historical vertical division, with the ground floor accommodating archaeological displays and the upper floor housing ethnographic collections. The building's architectural constraints, stemming from its multi-century age and 2006 to 2008 refurbishment, mean that specific modern accessibility accommodations, such as ramps or wheelchair pathways beyond the street level, are not documented.

The museum is located on Fidanlık Street in the Kocacami neighborhood of Burhaniye. It offers free admission to the public. Operating hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays, with the facility remaining closed on Sundays. The institution functions as an educational venue emphasizing the layered history of the Burhaniye district, from its ancient roots to its role in the national resistance movement.
