Centro de Fotografía Isla de Tenerife

The Centro de Fotografía Isla de Tenerife is a museum dedicated to photography located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. Opened in 1989, it operates under the administrative umbrella of TEA (Tenerife Espacio de las Artes), to which it was transferred in 2008. The institution serves as the primary venue for photographic culture in the Canary Islands, combining exhibition programming with conservation, research, and educational activities. Its holdings exceed 60,000 items, making it a significant repository for both documentary and artistic photography in Spain and the Atlantic region.

The Centro de Fotografía was established on 30 November 1989 by resolution of the Cabildo de Tenerife, the island's governing council. Its founding mandate was to promote artistic creation with contemporary expressive potential and to rescue and preserve the dispersed photographic heritage of the Canary Islands. Initially integrated into the Organismo Autónomo de Museos y Centros, the institution was reassigned at the end of 2008 to TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, formerly the Instituto Óscar Domínguez (IODACC). Francisco González served as its first director from the outset. Antonio Vela de la Torre directed the centre from 1996 until his retirement in 2016, after which directorship passed to the head of TEA, currently art historian Gilberto González. Since 1991, the centre has organised FOTONOVIEMBRE, the Festival Internacional de Fotografía de Tenerife, a biennial international photography event. Over its history, the centre has mounted more than 400 exhibitions.

The centre maintains two principal photograph collections: one of documentary photography and one of artistic photography. Its holdings encompass over 60,000 items, including significant Canary Islands material such as glass plate negatives, paper originals from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and stereoscopic plate collections. The archive also contains a collection of postcards depicting the Canary Islands and a large holding of magic lantern slides. Contemporary holdings feature works by local, national, and international photographers. The centre additionally preserves collections of cameras and photographic equipment from various periods, selected for their technical significance and educational value. Much of the archive is accessible online, and the institution continues to develop a digitised information nucleus to facilitate remote consultation of its graphic, bibliographic, and documentary materials without compromising physical integrity.

The centre holds a substantial collection of works by Óscar Domínguez, the Surrealist painter and native of Tenerife after whom the former Instituto Óscar Domínguez was named. Its broader collections include works by Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Graciela Iturbide, David LaChapelle, Miwa Yanagi, Adam Fuss, Pierre Molinier, Alberto Shommer, Carlos Schwartz, Javier Vallhonrat, Néstor Torrens, Juan Carlos Batista, Ferrán Freixa, Teresa Arozena, Rafael Navarro, Carmela García, Francis Naranjo, Ferrero Villares, Pilar Pequeño, Julio Álvarez Yagüe, Isabel Flores, Tarek Ode, Poldo Cebrián, Luigi Guirri, Juan Hidalgo, Trino Garriga, Karina Beltrán, and Pierre Vallet. The institution also participates in the MEDIAT project (Memoria Digital Atlántica), a digital heritage initiative involving the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands, in collaboration with DRAC Madeira through the Museu Vicentes, El Museo Canario, DRAC Açores, and ADIRAH Açores.

The Centro de Fotografía was originally housed in the neoclassical building known as Centro de Arte La Recova in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Constructed in 1847 by architect Manuel de Oráa, the building was originally designed as the city market and subsequently served various functions before one of its wings was adapted in 1991 to accommodate the photography centre. Since its integration into TEA, the centre's consultation space has been incorporated into the Centro de Documentación y Biblioteca de Arte de TEA, within the architectural complex designed by the Swiss firm Herzog & De Meuron in collaboration with Virgilio Gutiérrez. The centre's facilities include a studio and photo laboratory, conference room, specialised library of more than 3,500 volumes, archives, storage collections, a gift shop, a restaurant, and MiniTEA, a space for children's and family activities.
